SCERTS

SCERTSSCERTS is a multidisciplinary framework that is based upon research in child development as well as research identifying the core challenges faced by children with autism and social emotional learning differences. There is a recognition that learning in childhood occurs in the social context of daily activities and experiences. It can be adapted to meet the unique demands of different social settings for younger and older individuals including home, school, community and vocational settings.

We know that the level of need relating to social communication is reported to be increasing across all establishments. There is limited capacity within specialist provision but also specialist provision is not always the most appropriate setting for children and young people who are motivated by some level of social interaction and communication. This level of need suggests we need to adapt our classrooms to support the range of learners with social communication and emotional regulation needs.

A SCERTS implementation team has been established (EPs, EYISS, SALT, OT, practitioners from early years, primary, secondary, and ASN sector) to support professional learning, dialogue and coaching around the SCERTS assessment and intervention framework. This work is supported by the National Autism Implementation Team (NAIT).
