Improvement Work, Aspirations and Work Readiness

North Ayrshire Education and Youth Employment initiated a research project to find out if there was any difference between what young people think about how to find a job they want and what business and industry want in their employees.

Young PeopleOpinions were gathered from S4 pupils across North Ayrshire about young people’s hopes and ambitions for entering the world of work when the time comes. By gaining these thoughts as well as the opinions of local business and industries we want to maximise the chances of young people finding a career path that suits them and their future employer.

We have now carried out an initial analysis of information gathered an identified the following:

Gaps in pupils’ knowledge and awareness, regarding employability, across all groups have become apparent and can be categorized as follows:

  • Identification of personal skills
  • Evidencing these skills
  • Transferable skills
  • Skills required by employers in general
  • Competencies for specific jobs
  • Awareness of types of jobs potentially available locally.

What employers want:

  • Good attitude
  • Willingness to learn
  • Good communication
  • Appropriate appearance
  • Work ethic
  • Adaptability
  • Reliability.

We now have a clearer focus for intervention and a series of workshops have been developed which schools can use to enhance pupils knowledge in this area.
